Today I received two phone calls from prospective tenants who had seen a posting on Craig's List for a season-long rental in Edgartown. 4 bedrooms and $1000 per month. It sounded too good to be true and since this scam posting had my name on it, these two sharp gals called me. I confirmed their fears - this is not a legitimate rental posting. And it asked them to send money to Egypt! So, Beware! If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. When it comes to rentals on Martha's Vineyard, most owners do not use an agent - they don't have to. All they have to do is put one ad in the local paper and it's gone!
Our listings are accessible on-line through our rental website and through the multiple listing service where we post are listings. All are weekly vacation home offerings - none are full season. Prices range from $1,000 per week to $40,000 per week.
So, if there is a number to call - call it. If there is a requirement to send money to some place outside our shores, be skeptical.
The last thing professional real estate agents want is for you to be scammed and left with no housing. I tracked down the CraigsList posting and reported it as fraudulent and as a scam. You can do the same. Help someone else out in the process.
